It has been a very long time since I posted last, but now I am out of school and have a bit more time (even though I'm still working on a paper). So here is a short list of some of the (non-school) books currently being read by yours truly.
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury (Dystopian Sci-Fi). Great book; I've not read it since high school but I love dystopia-themed work and Bradbury is an excellent writer. Plus, the movie Equilibrium was based off this novel, and it too was a good movie.
A Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R. Martin (Fantasy). Outstanding characters, great, complex story, and highly engaging writing style. Although it is fantasy, most of it is actually quite realistic with the political flair of 13th century France or 15th century England. Note: this ain't for the kiddies.
The Walking Dead - Robert Kirkman (Drama/Horror). A graphic novel series based around a small group of people surviving in a world controlled by zombies (gasp!). Although this genre has been bludgeoned by many such writings, this one stands out. The illustration is black and white, giving it a rather grim look, and the characters are very believable and well-written. Plus, Robert Kirkman is a KY native and the book begins near Cincinatti. How neat.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick (Sci-Fi). Taking place in the not-too-distant future, this novel portrays a diminished mankind clinging to a largely destroyed Earth after 'World War Terminus.' Robots are built to help humans in their toil, but become so like humans, that special detectives are hired to differentiate 'twixt the two. The author makes the reader think about what it is that makes us human, and sort of give an answer toward the end. Very entertaining.
The Complete Conan - Robert E. Howard (Fanstasy). Great fun. Yes it is hack-and-slash fantasy, big muscled barbarian kills lots of people and gets the girl at the end. But so hugely engrossing, and with its black and white, good v. bad plots, incredibly refreshing from some of the more 'shades of grey' works that are so popular now.
Ok, well that is the end of my list. Zombies, fantasy, and sci-fi, oh my!

Made up the last two to avoid sounding too trashy. Wow, my brain is shrinking as we speak. (However, I must say that Us Weekly ALWAYS turns out to be right and therefore I don't hold it in the same category as "gossip magazines". It's the Woodward/ Bernstein of the weekly celebrity news magazines, if you will.)
