Above is a member of the famous Varangian Guard, note Odin's raven on his shield.
Here we have a 'generic' soldier in possibly the late 9th or 10th centuries, perhaps a tagmatic soldier.
Lastly is a great depiction of Basil II, victorious as always, with a Varangian on his right, and what could be two members of the tagmata on his left.

Your blog-reading public DEMANDS more updates. Upon your return from your honeymoon, let's have a little more personal info and stories (keywords: John, Hilary, Lexington, UK, Santorini, loft, etc.) and a little less Roman...Byzantine...history... blah...blah...blah...okay? You won't be across the yard or at weekend dinners at The Depot to harass in person any more, so I'll have to do so strictly by computer. Have Hilary help you with this if necessary.
